Great! There is however another update many are yet unaware of that was launched end of November 2018.
As a result of their efforts to make the social platform more accessible for those who are visually impaired, Instagram now lets you add alt text to your images. Is this important to you? Absolutely! What is alt text?
Alt text stands for 'alternate text', and simply put it tells people what is in an image. If an image on your website fails to load, alt text will display in its place. Search engines also index alt text information and consider it a factor when determining SEO ratings.
How to write alt text for your Instagram posts
An alt text is usually a short description, no more than 1-2 sentences long. For Instagram, it is recommended that your write alt text in more detail than what you do on your website or blog, however, make sure that it is 125 characters or less to be compatible with the most popular screen readers.
So how do you best write them? The easiest way is to write it how you would explain it if someone asks you what’s in a specific image:
“Hi Christine, who’s that in the photo with you?”
“It’s my fluffy dog and my groom driving the horse box back from a one-day event”.
Alt text can be added to photos during the publishing process by following the steps below:
Start by taking a photo or uploading an existing photo to Instagram.
Choose a filter and edit the image, then tap Next.
Tap Advanced Settings at the bottom of the screen.
Tap Alt Text.
Write your alt text in the box and tap Done.
You can also add alt text to images already published on Instagram:
Go to the photo and tap the three-dot menu icon.
Tap Add Alt Text in the bottom right of your image.
Write the alt text in the box and tap Done.
