Marketing For Equestrians

What is marketing, and how important is it for the success of your business? Some say very, others say not at all. With the development of the equestrian industry and it becoming more technologically advanced, alongside a society that spend more time looking at screens than they do sleeping every day, can you afford not to invest exposure?

"I don't like marketing."

Doing what we do, we could’ve called this blog “Marketing For Equestrians Who Don’t Like Marketing”, as it’s something we have heard business owners and individuals tell us on numerous occasions! We think this is the result of several reasons, one of which is costs.

Because yes, marketing can be costly, however it doesn't have to be. Another reason and common misconception is thinking that marketing is selling. Yes, selling is marketing. But marketing is not selling. Marketing isn't even promotion, though promotion is marketing. Marketing is a much bigger process, but can simply be explained as the management process through which your goods or services move from concept to the customer.

Huh? Well basically, if you offer products, services, ideas, skills or anything else to other people, you are marketing. If you are trying to get people to submit into an idea or ideal, you are marketing. Saving the world or advocating human rights? Marketing.

This blog post is marketing too (even though we don't sell anything in it). In other words, marketing has less to do with getting customers to pay for your product and more to do with developing a demand for that product. And logically, greating a demand will in turn generate sales, which will keep you and your business going!

Opt-In to Marketing

For those who run a business, sell products or services, or want to build an audience (including blog readership and social media followers), marketing is not optional. It's something you must do, and since you are already offering the services and selling the products, why won't you just get on with it? No excuses!

Here are some quick marketing must-do's for those who don't like marketing:

1. Create a Striking Website

No need for a website as everyone uses social media nowadays? Wrong! Social platforms are there to compliment your website, providing your customers with current information and news. If you want to reach out to a large audience with your product and service, creating a website is a fundamental step to making a great impression. When users visit your website to learn more about you, they will form an impression about your company based on your website. Fine details, rich and relevant content, and a neat layout for easy navigation are all equally important. Your website should also be optimized to different types of devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablets. Therefore, invest time and money to build an impressive website (you can see EQuerry's options for website creation packages here).

2. Generate Knowledgeable Content

Now that you have invested in creating a good website, you need to fill it with knowledgeable content. Create resources such as blogs, infographics, videos, and case studies. If you are struggling to come up with ideas, see what others in your niche focus on! What do they do that cause traction?

3. Connect with Digital Media

The Internet is like an ocean and there are thousands of online media sites that may publish articles written by you, your company, products or services. Influence journalists and authors to write about you - there are many external websites that will allow you to publish press releases for product launches or similar. Spend time to research which online sites are good platforms to publish your content, and build a relationship with journalists and editors within the medium(s) that will best serve your business.

4. Get on Social Media

- S. H. Simmons

“If a young man tells his date how handsome, smart and successful he is – that’s advertising. If the young man tells his date she’s intelligent, looks lovely, and is a great conversationalist, he’s saying the right things to the right person and that’s marketing. If the young man's friend tells the young woman how handsome, smart and successful her date is – that’s PR.”

All in all, marketing isn't that difficult nor it's such an alien concept. It's creating, communicating and delivering; bringing a product, service, idea, skillset or other offerings to your existing and potential markets. Surely, you cannot think of a reason why you wouldn't want to do just that?
